In 2009 I became the technical director for 4by6com. It was my job to manage and program the back end for this online printing company. The PHP/MySQL-based website was only part of the equation. There was also an extensive AppleScript driven back end that fully automated the printing process. Clients could upload their files to the website and then receive their print product in the mail with minimal human interaction.

Eset Wanted Santa

ESET is one of Europe’s largest security software companies. They wanted to create some viral games for the Christmas season. This project allowed people to upload photos of themselves and place them within the sentiment shots, which could then be e-mailed their friends. This was a flash-based micro-site.

Monterey Aquarium

These are very subtle banner ads that were created to encourage kids to sign up for a special breakfast event. I worked with the designers’ files to create and animate these flash-based banners.

Fine Design had designed a new website for the Stags Leap Winery. I did the flash production and programming. This is a flash-based website.

Splatter Maker

This company wanted an interactive splatter game that would allow people to create splatter art in the Jackson Pollock fashion, and then be able to e-mail their creations to their friends. It was meant to be a viral video. Stamen Design created the original files and I modified them to work with Action Script Three and added the additional components for e-mailing the creation. This is a flash-based game.

Paul Mason Photography Site

I produced this animated, interactive, flash-based website. This was a photography portfolio and it was important to manage the download speeds of the images to give the best user experience.

HP Timeline

Using HP timeline, a flash-based navigator for exploring videos and presentation materials, I showcased the history of IDEO’s work in a timeline format.

Luminox:

Watch Website

Luminox wanted a website that they could easily update themselves. To do this they needed a content management system as well as an entire site redesign, which I developed and designed. This is a PHP and MySQL-based website.

Podcast Presentation

A photography consultant wanted to discuss podcasts in a presentation format. I created this flash-based interface that allowed her to browse and navigate the various podcasts. I also created several of the podcasts using Aftereffects. This is a flash-based interface with video.

WSO Refinements

Over the years I’ve done a number of projects for WebSite Optimization to help them improve the performance of flash elements on websites. In some cases I consult about the best options, and in others I work on the original files to bring the file size down and have the animation play faster.

The Sak:

Online Catalog

The Sak wanted an online catalog that functioned like a printed-paper catalog. This flash-based mini site included animated effects of the page actually turning when the user chose the next page. The user could also highlight areas within each page to be able to zoom in, get more information, and place orders. This is a flash-based website module.

11 Inc:

The Doctors Company

11 Inc had designed this mini site and they asked me to produce it. This is a flash-based interface that allows you to navigate through various clips of video. One of the key points was that the animated text in the video was also flash-based and layered on top.

HP Book

This was a book showcasing a work that IDEO had done for HP. I compiled the various videos, flash animations, and PDF documents that made up the archive for this project.

Nokia FlashLite Interface

This is a project for Nokia are that involved programming the actual interface that would appear on the phones. I used Flashlight, a lightweight flash action script.

PBS Media Gallery

A new redesign of the PBS website was in play. They needed an interactive media gallery that allowed users to browse various videos, and sound and picture slide shows that were available on the site. I did both the design and the flash development on this project. This is a flash-based module.

Banner Ads

This is a series of banner ads created by Teamworks and then handed over to me for production. I used Flash to create the animations and added clever use of action script to keep the file sizes below the 15 K limit.

PC World

Meta-Design was redesigning the PC world website. They wanted to have a flash features module placed in the center of the home page. For the purpose of search engines, the flash movie needed to pull its content from the HTML in the page. This is a flash-based interactive module.

Dog House Wines

For Dog House Wines, I was asked to produce a site designed by Voicebox Creative. This flash-based website included XML supplied content, 3-D interactive navigation, and a scalable screen environment.

Cingular Developers Tool

Cingular had a document that explained how to develop for their cell phone platform. They wanted to do something more than a simple PDF so they asked us to create a flash-based document tool. This included a flash animation intro as well as an interactive interface. The content was XML-based and could be updated easily by someone with no flash experience. This is a flash-based micro-site.

IDEO:

New Years Card 2006

This was the second year of the IDEO Christmas card. The concept for this one was to break out the 365 days of the year into a grid in the sky that would be filled with stars. Employees of IDEO were asked to contribute by picking a day and telling a story about it. The more people who picked a particular day, the larger the star became. This is a flash-based interactive micro-site with a database back end.

Thoughless Acts

Thoughtless Acts was a book produced by IDEO that explored design that happens by accident in everyday life. I developed this website to allow people to upload their own ideas and photographs. The idea was to compile a collection of ‘thoughtless acts’ that can be explored online. This is a flash-based animation with a database backend.

IDEO:

New Years Card 2005

IDEO wanted to produce a companywide Christmas card that all of its several hundred employees could contribute to along with the recipients. The premise of the card was that people could make their own snowflake. Once they had made their snowflake they could also add a wish for the New Year, and then add it to the collection. During the days leading up to Christmas more than 1000 people contributed their wishes to this Christmas card.

SafariU Demo

Safari U is an online education source for teachers that allow them to create online courses for their students. I designed, animated, and developed this interactive demo. This was a Flash-based animation mixed with sound and basic interactivity.

Panoptx Website

Pinot makes specialty glasses for motorcycle and outdoor sports enthusiasts. Their glasses block the excess winds that generate with high motion activity. I developed the interactive portions of the website that allowed users to browse various sunglasses. This is a Flash-based animation and interactive piece.

Nike Skateboarding

Odopod was creating the flagship website for Nike. The site was meant to be a showcase of skills as well as to be a cutting-edge website. I created the media viewer section as well as various other animation portions of the site. The site went on to win many awards. This is a flash-based website which exploited the latest potentials of action script.

Intel Zephyros

Intel was releasing a pair of new products and needed an interactive presentation tool. This was a flash-based presentation that included video, photography, sound, and interactive bullet points. The presentation describes the use of the products in six different countries around the world.

OEM Product Demo

AudioFeast was a company that produced subscribable content for MP3 users. They needed a collection of tradeshow materials including this demo interactive animation, which was burned to a series of USB drives and given out to prospective clients. This is a flash-based demo with many interactive controls for sound, navigation, and animation.

Slideshow Player

Simple Star is the company that produced an online slide-show development system. The purpose was to allow people with minimal skills to produce dynamic videos that could be shared with friends and family. I contributed to the development of the software and added many of the visual effects.

MAD is a design company based in Sausalito California. As part of the production of a monograph of their work, I created a Director-based CD-ROM portfolio of their multimedia work to be included with the book.

Academy of Country Music Promo

This was the second year of producing a CD-ROM for the Academy of Country Music to be distributed throughout the US at Wal-Mart stores. Dr. Pepper was the main client and they had asked for an entertaining collection of activities to be produced on CD-ROM.

Contribute FMA

Macromedia had a spot on the home page of their website that they referred to as the flexible messaging area. Weekly, the content of this area would be replaced with new flash-based animations that would be illustrating the current topic of the week. I helped design, produce, and program these animations.

Dr Pepper:

Red Cross Safety Games CDROM

Dr. Pepper was sponsoring the Red Cross and they wanted a CD-ROM of games related to safety and first aid to be distributed in all the Wal-Marts in the US. These CD-ROMs would be given away with the purchase of Dr. Pepper bottles at a store display. We created a series of fun computer games for children 6 to 16 for this project.

This was a Flash screensaver created for IBM specially for use by their Lotus Notes department.

Chronopolis:

Paris Installation

Chronopolis was a project created by Eric Adigard and Chris Salter. They had asked me to help with the development of the graphical portion of the program. This was a large-scale interactive projection that was on display in Paris during the 2002 La Villette Media Festival. I created the animations and interactive graphics for this installation.

Dr Pepper:

Academy of Country Music Promo

Dr. Pepper was sponsoring the Academy of Country Music Awards. They wanted to produce one million CD-ROMs that would be distributed in Wal-Marts across the US to promote both Dr. Pepper and the Academy of Country Music Awards. The CD-ROM included games, facts, music, videos, and pictures.

HP Ad Banners: NYSE

These are flash-based banners with incredibly small size. They were crafted entirely by using ActionScript to create the animations. Size requirements were very tight and any other animation technique would have made too large a file. This was a particular challenge because ActionScript had only recently been updated to handle more complex scripting.

Fine Art Museums of San Francisco Brand Guidelines

This was a digital form of guidelines for the new branding scheme of the Fine Arts Museums of San Francisco by Wolff-Olins. This was a Flash file that could be distributed among designers and agencies with instructions on color, text, and logo usage.

Eight Inc.:

Portfolio

Eight Inc. needed a portfolio that served multiple purposes. They wanted to be able to talk through the presentation and to quickly select items that they wanted to show as part of their presentation. The easy to use interface for the CD-ROM portfolio gave multiple options to quickly access any portfolio item.

Circumstance:

Intel Pentium III Demos

Intel had just launched the new Pentium III and was expanding its website to contain information about what was possible with Pentium III. This intro animation established a sense of mood and excitement, before giving the user a set of choices as to where to go from there. This is a flash based animation with basic interactivity.

Nike Alpha Project

This landing page was an intro animation for the Nike Alpha Project advertising campaign, entirely done in flash. There were 5 versions of the animation that corresponded with a matching television campaign. This was created in the early days of flash.
